Omics in Biofortification: Unlocking Nutritional Potential

To address the increasing food demands of a rapidly expanding population, it is imperative to build up scientific aspects of various practices employed in crop production. Recent scientific advances in genetic resources have given us many ways to learn more about the molecular mechanism that controls how a particular trait is turned up or down. This has opened up new opportunities for marker-assisted breeding to develop unique varieties. From this point of view, Next-generation sequencing, genome selection (NGS), Quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and expression profiling are all types of genetic analysis that help to develop crops rich with some essential nutrients. The recent advances in next-generation DNA sequencing technologies with refined, fast, accurate algorithms and tools allow the discovery of superior haplotypes to increase the nutritional content and develop biofortified crops. Various integrated omics approaches including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, ionomics, metabolomics, phenomics, and machine learning techniques can play a decisive role in crop biofortification. This article gathers information from omics studies that show how to get higher yields and improve the nutritional value and design biofortified crops to fight hunger and malnutrition.
