Cultural sustainability in hospitality and tourism: toward a holistic framework

Purpose This paper proposes a holistic framework that identifies factors at micro-, meso- and macro-levels and their impacts on the development and evolution of cultural sustainability in hospitality and tourism. Design/methodology/approach A thorough literature review is conducted to construct a conceptual framework for cultural sustainability in hospitality and tourism. Findings Their conceptual framework identifies critical micro-, meso- and macro-level factors. When considered together, these elements offer a comprehensive lens for understanding the complex dynamics shaping cultural sustainability in hospitality and tourism. Research limitations/implications Theoretically, the propositions extend the existing literature by offering high-level insights into the complex relationships among various factors and their effects on cultural sustainability. Practical implications This conceptual paper discusses a critical aspect of sustainability – how hospitality and tourism developments impact cultural sustainability and the aspects that policymakers should prioritize.
