This mixed-methods investigation examines the integration of Microsoft Reflect, a digital emotional check-in platform into Japanese university EFL curricula to enhance emotional awareness and metalinguistic competence. In this study, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) refers to students’ capacity to recognize, label, and reflect on their emotional states as part of language learning. The ERQ-CA survey enabled exploration of students’ strategies for reframing emotions. Through a convergent parallel design incorporating quantitative measures (ERQ-CA, n = 180) and qualitative data (instructor journals, student responses), we analyzed emotional vocabulary acquisition, classroom engagement patterns, and pedagogical adaptation strategies. Findings demonstrate that technology-mediated SEL interventions can foster emotional literacy and metacognitive language awareness when embedded within culturally responsive pedagogical frameworks. However, sociocultural factors, including emotional restraint norms and collectivist values, influenced authentic engagement with digital emotional reporting. This research contributes to CALL scholarship by examining the intersection of affective computing, second language acquisition, and cross-cultural educational technology implementation.
