Significance At its largest scale (≈ 2,500 km), the Himalayan mountain range and its two principal thrusts (Main Frontal and Main Central Thrusts) may have grown as confocal ellipses since the Mid-Miocene. This would account for the factor ≈ 3 between overthrusting rates in central Nepal and near both syntaxes, for the more frequent and larger magnitude earthquakes in Nepal, and for the ≈ EW extension across southern Tibet. Mechanically, the great collisional range appears to have been pinned at both of its extremities by the northern tips of the great strike-slip faults that bound India to the east and west.
