Understanding Journalists’ Perceptions of Financial Security, Welfare, and Productivity in TV Stations in North Central Nigeria

The study sought to investigate whether welfare and financial security are perceived to enhanced the performance of journalists in television station in the North Central of Nigeria. The expectancy and reinforcement theories provided the framework for the study to analyze how workers can be motivated to improve their performance if they expect any reward and how employees tend to repeat certain attitudes to work if such behaviors resulted in positive outcome. An opinion survey was conducted on a sample of 124 journalists. Findings of the study showed that there is a relationship between financial security, welfare measures/packages and productivity of journalists in TV stations in North Central States of Benue, FCT, and Plateau. Specifically, the study revealed that there are poor employee welfare measures in the organizations studied. Findings indicate a level of dissatisfaction among journalists at the selected TV stations, primarily due to the absence of adequate employee welfare measures. The institutionalization of comprehensive welfare provisions is recommended. It is also advised that all stakeholders recognize the vital role of motivation in driving organizational productivity.
