The Mamluk State witnessed an extraordinary development in 1412. In this date, the Abbasid caliph in Cairo, al-Mustaîn Billah, was declared the sultan of the Mamluk State in addition to his caliphate and was on the Mamluk throne for about six months. In addition to being an extraordinary and interesting example, this event is actually closely related to the internal political dynamics of the Mamluk State and is a direct result of them. Two of the emirs who rebelled against the rule of Sultan Ferec at those dates were Nevruz, Naib of Damascus and Sheikh al-Mahmudî, Naib of Tripoli. These amirs united on the same opposing side and succeeded in dethroning the Sultan, but the power struggle that emerged between them in the following process required both of them to stay away from the throne for a while. In fact, it was also a preparation process for the throne, which had different manifestations in the history of the Mamluk State. For this transition period, the sultanate of the caliph came to the fore and was implemented. Although the sultanate of al-Mustaîn Billah, concurrent with his caliphate, has a special place in the history of the Mamluk State, this practice constitutes an discrete but an important example for a better understanding of the Mamluk political system.
