Research On The Characteristics of Group Cognitive Engagement In Collaborative Learning

Learning engagement is an important indicator which reflects learning outcomes. In collaborative learning contexts, it is necessary to shift the focus of learning engagement from an individual-behavioral orientation to a group-cognitive orientation. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the characteristics of group cognitive engagement in collaborative learning contexts. The participants were 24 Chinese undergraduate students, who were divided into groups of three, and their collaborative learning process were recorded. Content analysis and lag sequence analysis were used to analyze the video data. Firstly, significant differences between high and low performance groups were discovered in group overall cognitive engagement and its transition sequences. Furthermore, the study revealed the specific evolutionary characteristics of each group's cognitive engagement over time. It is an innovative exploration of learning engagement research that shift the research perspective from individual level to group level, which provides valuable references for future research and pedagogical practices.
