ABSTRACT From the perspectives of Contemporary Architecture and Landscape Architecture, vernacular dwellings are conceptualized as spatial-landscapes that embody rational responses to environmental factors such as climate, topography, and materials. This study investigated Huizhou courtyard dwellings, a representative example of Chinese vernacular architectural heritage, using typological diagrams as the primary research method. Five dimensions – natural factors, form constitutions, spatial hierarchies, landscape interfaces, and environmental components – were systematically analyzed to establish the ‘spatial-landscape modes’ in these dwellings. The findings revealed regularities in spatial organization, mechanisms of climatic regulation, landscape design principles, and material construction strategies guided by environmental adaptation. By uncovering the ecological logic and spatial configurations embedded in Huizhou courtyards, this research provides theoretical insights and practical guidance for the protection and renewal of vernacular spatial-landscapes in contemporary contexts.
