Breathing in a changing climate: Compounding risks to respiratory health in Canada

Abstract This article reviews the growing evidence on how climate change is impacting respiratory health in Canada. It highlights key exposures—wildfire smoke, air pollution, extreme heat and aeroallergens—and their effects on lung disease. Drawing on Canadian research, we identify disproportionate risks among vulnerable populations and emphasize the urgent need for accelerated mitigation and targeted adaptation efforts. Clinicians and public health professionals have a crucial role to play in protecting patients and strengthening resilience to climate-related respiratory threats.
