How Communication Media Serves as the Bridge for the Furtherance of Ethno-Religious Tolerance and Diversity in Nigeria

The media has been at the forefront in promotion of ethno-religious tolerance in the complex Nigerian society. Despite its efforts, the country continues to witness unprecedented level of religious intolerance and chaos linked to ethno-religious factors. This tends to make mockery of the efforts of the media and other stakeholders. Therefore, this study’s objective was to examine the media and how it serves as the bridge for the furtherance of ethno-religious tolerance and diversity in Nigeria. The study was anchored on mediatisation, agenda-setting, and framing theories. Utilising the systematic literature review, findings of the study based on analysis of existing literature (n = 23) highlight that various media genres that include radio and television, newspapers and social media have been used to promote tolerance in the country. Several frames such as cause, consequence, solutions, enemy, stereotypes, and episodic were also seen to be utilised highlighting the nuanced approaches of the Nigerian media in the coverage of ethno-religious conflicts. Finally, results show that the media faced several inhibitive challenges prominent among which include assault, poor remuneration, harassment, death threats, and the tone of the report among others.
