Exploring the Applicability of an SEL Assessment Tool in the Context of a College Choir Class

This study examines the reliability of a measurement tool for assessing college students’ Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies within the context of a choir class offered as a general education course. A total of 104 students enrolled in a choir course at S University in the C region participated in the survey. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0, focusing on reliability analysis (Cronbach’s α) and descriptive statistics. The results revealed high internal consistency across all five SEL subdomains—self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making—demonstrating that the instrument functions reliably in an arts-based instructional setting. These findings provide empirical support for the use of SEL assessment tools in college-level arts-integrated education and underscore the value of embedding SEL within higher education curricula. Future research is encouraged to employ more comprehensive approaches, such as pre-post comparisons and qualitative methods, to further investigate the multifaceted educational impacts of arts-based learning environments.
