Attacks are growing more sophisticated and affect organizations with more and more complex threats over distributed and decentralized environments. In incident response and forensic investigation, trustworthy, non-modifiable and verifiable logs are needed to build trust and provide accountability. Nevertheless, legacy logging solutions tend to be hijackable, a single point of failure, and have geographic inconsistencies. This study explores an approach of using blockchain technology in a framework for recording and sharing cybersecurity incident data securely and confidently through strong assurances of immutability, transparency, and auditability, even in distributed operational settings. We present a block-chain based recording system for collecting the cybersecurity event logs generated by heterogeneous systems at various locations securely. To the best of our knowledge, our approach is the first to use a permissioned blockchain in order to have a good access control and at the same time a distributed consensus among legitimate users. The smart contract use case for our system would be enforcing rules over valid data and compliance checks, where it provides cryptographically signed immutable proof of incidents. The work also investigates data integrity using hashing, encryption for confidentiality, and consensus algorithms designed for high-throughput, low-latency near-real-time logging in production networks. We then propose a system architecture that brings together log ...
