Evaluation of the Serum Levels of IL6 and Magnesium in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients (CKD), and CKD Patients with Different Comorbidities

Background : Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health concern that causes a substantial increase in morbidity and mortality rates among adults. CKD is accompanied with several complications, including cardiovascular disease (CVD) and death. We aimed to study the relation of the level of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the serum and magnesium (Mg) in CKD and CKD patients with various comorbidities. Patients and methods : This cross-sectional study involved 100 CKD adult predialysis patients, they were subdivided into four groups; the first group included 21 patients with CKD only, the second group included 29 patients with CKD and diabetes mellitus, the third group included 34 patients with CKD and hypertension and the fourth group included 16 patients with CKD and CVD (CKD þ CVD). Results : At cutoff value of greater than 22.4 pg/ml, serum IL-6 with area under the curve of 0.957 can significantly predict the progression of the disease ( P < 0.001), with 80 % sensitivity, 93.33 % specificity 79.2 % negative predictive value, and 93.6 % positive predictive value. At cutoff value of less than or equal to 1.49 mg/dl, serum Mg with area under the curve of 0.920 can significantly predict the progression of the disease ( P < 0.001), with 90.91 % sensitivity, 60 % specificity, 73.5 % positive predictive value, and 84.4 % negative predictive value.
