This paper investigates the design, modeling, and high-performance maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control of a unit Oil-submersible permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for electric submersible pump systems. First, the stator and rotor topologies, pole-slot combination, stator slot geometry, and permanent magnet materials of the oil-submersible motor are studied, based on which the design scheme of the unit motor is developed and the corresponding motor parameters are presented. Then, considering the operating characteristics of the oilsubmersible motor, an improved nonlinear mathematical model is established in which the inductance and flux-linkage parameters are influenced by core saturation and cross-coupling effects. Finally, a simulation study on the high-performance MTPA control method is carried out by implementing the improved motor model in simulation software, thereby verifying the effectiveness of both the motor modeling approach and the highperformance MTPA control method.
