Giant magnetostrictive materials (GMM) are characterized by large magnetostrictive strain, high magnetism-machine coupling coefficient and fast response. GMM are commonly used in micro-displacement actuators. As a kind of GMM, Galfenol patches are used for ultrasonic guided wave detection in recent years. However, Galfenol rod also can be used at a few tens of kHz, when input voltage signal is constant, the attenuation of the signal will increase with the increase of frequency and low excitation frequency can reduce signal atenuation effectively. In this paper, a novel method for damage detection based on ultrasonic guided waves technology is presented, that use Galfenol Rod Transducer (hereinafter referred to as GRT) to excite Lamb wave in aluminum plate at low frequency and receive signals by d33 PZT transducer. In the course of the experiment, we use the method of mutual interference between defective signals and non-defective signals to determine whether there are defects in elliptic range that we calculated.
