The role of the Russian language in the multinational space of Central Asia: challenges and strategies for preservation

This article analyses the role of the Russian language in the multinational space of Central Asia in the context of contemporary geopolitical and social transformations. It examines the historical foundations of the spread of the Russian language in the region, as well as contemporary trends in its use in various spheres of public life, such as education, interethnic communication, business and culture. The article analyses the current status of the Russian language in Central Asian countries and examines a range of factors influencing its status, use and prospects for development. In the multinational and multicultural environment of Central Asia, Russian has long served as the main means of interethnic communication and an important tool for political, economic and cultural interaction with Russia and other countries of the world. It has retained its role as a ‘bridge’ language, promoting integration and mutual understanding between different ethnic and linguistic groups. However, in recent years, the role of the Russian language has been undergoing changes caused by a complex set of domestic political, social and international factors. The active promotion of national languages and the political strategy of a number of states in the region have led to a noticeable decline in the status of the Russian language and restrictions on its use in education, official paperwork and everyday communication.
