Potatoes, one of the most important agricultural crops on a global scale, are used by humans both fresh and as raw material for the production of a huge number of food products – from mashed potatoes to chips and starch. However, the high yield of this valuable plant is constantly faced with a serious threat from various pathogens, including fungi, bacteria and viruses. The potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd) is of particular concern. It causes significant economic losses to agricultural producers around the world. Its harmful effects include reduced yields, deterioration in tuber quality (deformation, reduction in size) and, as a result, a decrease in the market value of products. Currently, unfortunately, there are no effective methods for treating potatoes from PSTVd infection. This means that the fight against this viroid should primarily be aimed at prevention – preventing the spread of infection to healthy plants. Timely and accurate diagnostics play a key role in this process. Modern diagnostic methods allow us to detect the presence of the viroid at the early stages of infection, before its negative impact becomes obvious. This is critical for taking timely measures to localize foci of infection and prevent its further spread. Our study focuses on the use of a highly sensitive diagnostic method – real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) – to detect PSTVd in various potato varieties. RTPCR is a powerful molecular biological tool that allows you to detect even minim...
