ABSTRACT Under the pressing challenges posed by urbanization, such as road traffic, limited activity spaces, and environmental inequalities, ensuring children’s well-being in urban environments has become a critical issue. Children’s physical, cognitive, and social development is significantly influenced by their living environments, yet traditional urban planning often overlooks their unique needs. To address this gap, this study focuses on integrating child-friendliness into urban community planning, particularly through the lens of the “15-minute community living circle” model. This model emphasizes the creation of urban spaces where essential facilities are within a 15-minute walk, aligning with children’s physical capabilities and daily needs. The study develops a comprehensive and quantitative evaluation system for assessing child-friendliness living circles, focusing on safety, comfort, and fun in travel and stay spaces. Using Shanghai’s Dongyuan I Village as a case study, the research uses online questionnaires, field surveys, and machine learning to quantify child-friendliness. Results demonstrate the model’s ability to provide micro-level evaluations and actionable insights for optimizing urban spaces. This research highlights the importance of prioritizing child-friendly principles in urban planning, offering valuable guidance for fostering safe, inclusive, and vibrant environments that support children’s growth and contribute to sustainable urban development.
