Sampling Mars: Geologic context and preliminary characterization of samples collected by the NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover Mission

Significance The NASA Perseverance Rover has collected numerous sealed sample tubes containing rock, regolith, and atmosphere that represent the different rock types encountered within Jezero Crater, Mars. Analysis of these samples in laboratories on Earth would enable fundamental questions to be addressed, including how Mars formed, its geologic evolution, and whether Mars ever hosted life.
