A Needs Analysis of a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)-Based Parent Competency Enhancement Group Program for Early Childhood Character Education

This study aimed to provide basic data for the development of a parent competency enhancement group program based on social-emotional learning (SEL) for early childhood character education by analyzing parents' experiences of educational participation, the necessity and operational methods of programs, social-emotional competency demands, and the relationships among related variables. The study participants were 157 parents with young children, and the collected data were processed using frequency analysis, t-tests, chi-square tests, Borich needs analysis, Locus for Focus (LFF) analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. The results showed that although parents’ participation rate in education was low, the perceived necessity of the programs and willingness to participate were high. Additionally, the required level of social-emotional competencies was significantly higher than the actual level of implementation, and the Borich needs and LFF analysis results identified self-awareness as the top priority intervention area, followed by responsible decision-making and self-regulation. Meanwhile, hierarchical regression analysis indicated that social-emotional competencies and demographic variables did not significantly influence the perceived necessity of the program, although at the sub-item level, average monthly income was found to have a significant effect on some items.
