Ekhard Salje used minerals as a Petri dish for solid state physics. He contributed across a vast range of problems, many of which reached beyond mineral science. His work covered ferroelasticity, domain wall physics, polarons, superconductivity, phase transitions and avalanche dynamics. He discovered that domain walls in crystals provide natural paths for electronic and ionic transport, and identified the polymerization of zircon during radioactive shock events as a basis for nuclear waste encapsulation in ceramics. In addition, Ekhard was a skilled academic manager, becoming president of Clare Hall College, Cambridge, and the head of two different departments, one at the Leibniz University of Hannover and the other being the Earth Sciences Department at the University of Cambridge. He was known as a sage and a natural conversationalist, who enjoyed talking to students and policy makers alike; they, in turn, enjoyed the breadth of his conversation and the depth of his advice. And, less noted but no less important to him, he was also a painter. In many ways, Ekhard Salje was a bit of a Renaissance man, a gentleman and a scholar.
