Bioinspired functional materials for biomedical applications

Bio-inspired materials, derived from the structures and functions of natural organisms, have shown significant promise in biomedical applications. This review highlights recent advances in three major classes of bio-inspired functional materials-hydrogels, bioceramics, and biomimetic metals-with emphasis on their design principles, structural characteristics, and applications in disease detection, targeted therapy, and biomimetic implants. By examining natural models such as plant surfaces, animal tissues, and microbial systems, we discuss how these inspirations have led to materials with enhanced biocompatibility, responsiveness, and mechanical performance. Current challenges and future directions in the field are also addressed.
