This dataset contains the national and gridded historical population data for ISIMIP3b Group III (Frieler et al. 2026, in prep.). Gridded estimates are available for total as well as urban and rural population counts. Annual country-level population data for 249 countries are based on the historic population estimates provided by the UN World Population Prospects (United Nations, 2019) until the year 2021. They are complemented by five yearly country-level future projections for SSP 1-5 (K.C. & Lutz, 2020, European Commission and Joint Research Centre, 2018, based on K.C. & Lutz, 2017). From 2021-2030 there is a transition period where the difference between the observed data in 2021 and the SSP projections in 2030 is gradually reduced to zero. From 2021-2100, the original projections in five-year steps are linearly interpolated to generate annual data. In addition, we also provide gridded population data. For the past we used HYDE v3.3 (Klein Goldewijk et al. 2017, 2023, resolution 5arcmin) as the basis, while the projection data is based on Jones et al. (2020, resolution 30arcsec). Both data sets provide total, urban and rural populations. These maps were scaled such that the country-level population numbers are matched. In order to avoid grid cell shared by countries the scaling was performed on a 30 arcsec grid. To be able to do this the HYDE data were transferred to the high resolution grid by evenly spreading the population in a 5 arcmin grid cell on the underly...
