Ancient Chinese poetry and prose are not only crystallizations of aesthetic experience, but also important carriers of social ethics, family order, and conceptions of life. Unlike materials from the history of eldercare institutions or ritual systems, classical poetry and prose more directly present the subjective experience of old age, the responsibilities of support within family relationships, and the ideal of respecting the elderly within the social community. This article takes classical Chinese poetry and prose as its primary object of analysis, while also drawing on classical texts such as the Book of Rites, the Analects, and the Classic of Filial Piety, as well as related studies on institutional history. The discussion is carried out from two dimensions: “aging consciousness” and “ethics of eldercare.” Th...
