Abstract The combination of the excellent carbon sequestration performance of basalt with compressed CO2 energy storage in aquifers has great research potential. However, the geochemical reactions caused by injected CO2 can affect reservoir properties, thereby affecting the system performance. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the feasibility of the system deployment. Based on this, this study constructed a compressed CO2 energy storage system based on basalt formations and explored the effects of different basalt formations and operating parameters on performance. The results indicate that the deployment of a compressed CO2 energy storage system in basalt formations is feasible, and the injection and extraction of gas during the energy storage process will significantly promote the dissolution of CO2. Economic analysis also indicates that it can recover the initial investment within its lifecycle, and its levelized cost of electricity is similar to the CAES systems in porous media. The formation with olivine as the main component has the best carbon sequestration performance, but the difference in the energy storage performance is not significant. The energy storage performance of the system is mainly affected by the gas-injection velocity. The energy efficiency at an injection velocity of 50 kg/s increased by 6.17%–6.52% compared to 30 kg/s. The carbon sequestration performance of the system is greatly affected by the porosity. The dissolution capacity of CO2 at a poros...
