Area Studies, as an emerging interdisciplinary field, has attracted significant academic attention for its disciplinary development and methodological innovations. This study applies corpus-based discourse analysis to Area Studies and proposes a four-step analytical framework. Based on collocates and concordances, it reveals the differences in the construction of “filial piety” in news discourse between Singapore and Malaysia and their underlying sociocultural roots. The findings indicate that Singapore’s “filial piety” discourse exhibits a distinctive modernization feature of being state-led and governance-oriented. In contrast, Malaysia’s “filial piety” discourse reflects local characteristics of social advocacy, cultural inheritance, and grassroots practice. The study suggests that the divergence in the discursive construction of “filial piety” is essentially the result of the interplay of their different historical trajectories, state governance models, and cultural contexts. It shows that corpus-based discourse analysis can offer a viable approach for Area Studies.
