The expression of “crossing” (Chuanyue) in East Asian film and television art initially drew inspiration from the concepts of “cross-boundary” and “crossing” in literary works, with the two often complementing and reinforcing each other. Through the use of lighting and visual effects, film and television art visually presents crossing, giving rise to diverse types such as crossing the boundary between life and death, traveling to alternate time-spaces, crossing within fictional time-space, and identity swapping. Crossing deeply integrates with themes such as romance, history, suspense, and comedy, expanding the expressive scope of film and television works and enhancing narrative tension. However, most creators set explicit conditions and limitations for the realization of crossing. The expression of crossing enriches the means of cinematic and television creation, provides an escape from reality for audiences, and can also be used to reflect social issues, serving as a compromised channel for the expression of ideas. With the popularity of crossing-themed works, a flood of related films and TV productions have emerged, yet their quality varies widely, sparking cultural reflection. In future, creators need to balance entertainment with respect for history, maintaining a deep and sincere humanistic concern. Both creators and viewers should work together to guide crossing toward civilized contemplation, rather than allowing it to degenerate into a wasteland of entertainment.
