Using social media to promote mental health and wellbeing of transgender individuals in Delhi NCR: experiences from the Manthan Social intervention

Background and Aims Gender is an important social determinant of health, and transgender individuals are reported to have disproportionately poorer mental health outcomes in comparison to gender conforming individuals in multiple countries, including India. Transgender individuals in India are often scattered and use social media as a source of information. Hence the study entitled ProMoting the mentAl health aNd wellbeing of Transgender persons in the national capital region of DelHi: AN intervention using SOCIAL media (Manthan Social) aimed to explore the feasibility and acceptability of using social media to improve the mental wellbeing of transgender individuals. Methods Manthan Social was a before-after quasi-experimental mixed method study, which was implemented for 9 months. During this period a combined of 20 video and image posts (using elements from a peer support model implemented in a larger study entitled Manthan) were uploaded to Instagram. Results Thirty-one transgender individuals living in the National Capital Region of Delhi, with mild anxiety and/or depression were enrolled into the study. The Manthan Social Instagram posts averaged 241 views, 11 interactions and reached 174 accounts per post. Conclusion The Manthan Social platform was found to be feasible and acceptable to transgender individuals.
