Carbon sequestration in soil in extensively used meadows: Experimental studies in the Fichtelgebirge mountains (north-eastern Bavaria) and analyses of the literature have shown that extensively used, biodiverse meadows represent a net carbon sink despite multiple mowing and grazing. The carbon is sequestered in the roots and the soil, with the relative allocation to roots and soil being even greater during droughts. The eddy covariance technique and isotope pulse labelling were used as measurement methods.
