Using extracellular enzyme activities as a main functional indicator, we tried to understand if heterotrophic microbial communities adapted to hypersaline conditions are fully functional despite the stressors they must face. Moreover, we studied how natural salinity fluctuations may affect this functioning. Thus has been done by sampling 4 hypersaline lakes in different moments, obtaining a natural hypersaline gradient. The study include physicochemical water parameters, extracellular enzyme activities, life to dead prokaryote ratio, photosynthetic pigments content, DOM quality and quantity indices, DOC, and TN.Columns from I to O contain hydrolitic extracellular enzyme activities data in μmol/(L h) and column P contain Phenol Oxidase activity data in mmol/(L h). Enzyme abbreviations stand for: aglu = α-glucosidase, bglu = β-glucosidase, bgla = β-glucosaminidase, bxyl = β-xylosidase, cbh = cellobiohydrolase, lip = lipase, leu = leucine-amino peptidase, and phox = phenol oxidase. From E to Z columns contain the peaks and indices obtained by the EEM matrices. From AA to AD columns indicate the results of Absorbance spectra of the filtered samples (DOM absorbance). TDOC and TN stands for Total dissolved organic carbon in mg/L and Total Dissolved Nitrogen in mg/L. Finally, Chla, BChl, and Carotens stands for Chlorophyll-a, Bacteriochlorophyll-a, and Carotenoids respectively in μg/L.
