Hyperpigmentation is the most common skin change in pregnancy caused by increasing concentrations of oestrogen, progesterone, and melanocyte-stimulating hormone: Existing pigmented areas become darker, e.g., areolae, axillae. New pigmentation appears, e.g., linea nigra. Melasma describes irregular darkening of the central face in ~70% of pregnancies, typically the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, and chin.
