Human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) shares an alpha subunit with TSH. This molecular mimicry means that in early pregnancy, when thyrotrophic beta-HCG concentrations are high, there is: Increased production of thyroid hormones (thyroxine [T4] and triiodothyronine [T3]). A decrease in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration due to negative feedback via the pituitary gland.
