Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Radiation Dermatitis With Vitamins Compared To Conventional Treatments

PURPOSE: Radiation therapy is used in more than half of cancer patients and frequently causes radiation dermatitis, with up to 95 percent of patients developing skin injury. Acute dermatitis includes erythema, dryness, and ulceration, while chronic changes are driven by inflammatory and fibroproliferative pathways that can result in permanent fibrosis. These sequelae compromise function, aesthetics, and quality of life, and may necessitate complex procedures such as fat grafting. Current management strategies rely on topical corticosteroids, barrier protectants, and emollients, which have limited efficacy and may cause adverse effects such as atrophy or insufficient long-term protection. Given their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, vitamins have been investigated as an alternative or adjunctive therapy for preventing and managing radiation dermatitis. METHODS: This systematic review was registered with Prospero and conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive literature search was performed in MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Central, and ClinicalTrials.gov for studies published in the last 20 years. Eligible studies included adult patients with acute or chronic radiation dermatitis graded by standardized criteria. Two reviewers independently conducted screening and data extraction, and the NIH quality assessment tool was used to evaluate study validity.
