In the 1950s, the Number Theory Group of the Institute of Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences held seminars to train young researchers. After four or five years of systematic training, the group cultivated a number theory research team. The members made important contributions of international influences in the field of analytic number theory, especially in research into the Goldbach conjecture. This article examines the formation, study and research of the number theory seminars from 1953 to 1958, and explores the research activities and academic ecology of the seminars under the leadership of Hua Loo-keng (华罗庚). The authors analyzes in particular how Hua cultivated talent in order to reveal several key factors necessary for the major breakthroughs made by Chinese mathematicians in the field of analytic number theory.
