Daily Polar Gridded Sea Ice Thickness

This dataset provides daily sea ice thickness estimates for both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres derived from observations of the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS (AMSR-E) and AMSR2 sensors using a sea ice history-based approach. Sea ice thickness is estimated by reconstructing sea ice history from AMSR-E and AMSR2-derived ice motion and concentration data, tracking ice parcels backward for up to four years, estimating the sea ice age composition from changes in ice area, and calculating thickness from the thermodynamic heat-balance history since ice formation. A conversion relationship between cumulative thermodynamic growth and actual sea ice thickness was derived from comparisons with upward-looking sonar observations in the Beaufort Sea and applied across the entire sea ice domain to produce daily thickness fields. Methodological details are described in Kimura and Hasumi (2026). Unlike the original study, which used daily atmospheric forcing, this dataset employs climatological atmospheric conditions to enable near-real-time data production.
