Interactive Mechanisms and Management Challenges of Plutella xylostella (Diamondback Moth) in Brassica

Brassica crops are vital for global oilseed production, supporting food, biofuel, and industrial sectors. However, their productivity is severely threatened by Plutella xylostella (diamondback moth, DBM), one of the most destructive pests. This chapter reviews the extensive impact of DBM on Brassica crops, covering its taxonomy, historical importance, and contribution to agricultural losses. It explores the insect’s oviposition and feeding behaviors, ecological interactions with host plants, and adaptive mechanisms that enable it to overcome plant defenses. The economic toll of DBM infestations is substantial, affecting yields and prompting reliance on diverse pest control strategies. These include chemical insecticides, biological controls using parasitoids, and integrated pest management (IPM) approaches. DBM also disrupts ecological balance by reducing plant fitness and altering trophic interactions. Genomic advances have enabled the development of novel control methods such as genetic engineering and RNA interference (RNAi). This chapter synthesizes the biochemical and ecological aspects of DBM–Brassica interactions and evaluates current management tactics. It concludes by highlighting research gaps and proposing future directions to enhance sustainable DBM control, emphasizing the need for eco-friendly, effective strategies to protect Brassica crops under increasing environmental stress.
