Students’ perceptions on Taman Rimba Ilmu Tanah Bris (TRIBE), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) EcoTrail as an environmental education medium

Environmental education in universities emphasises experiential learning to enhance students’ knowledge and sustainability awareness and one of approach is to utilise natural campus environments as educational media. In this context, Taman Rimba Ilmu Tanah Bris (TRIBE) at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Terengganu was developed as an outdoor learning initiative to support more contextual and meaningful environmental education. This study examines students’ perceptions of the TRIBE Eco Trail as a medium for environmental education, focusing on their knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to environmental issues. A quantitative survey design was employed involving 171 UniSZA students selected through random sampling. Data were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) through descriptive and chemometric analyses. The findings indicate that students’ perceptions of the TRIBE Eco Trail are generally positive. Respondents demonstrated strong acceptance of its role in enhancing environmental knowledge (Mean = 4.03) and supporting improvement and development (Mean range = 4.00 – 4.62). A strong positive correlation was found between knowledge (Construct B) and students’ perceptions (Construct C) (r = 0.947, p < 0.001). These results suggest that the TRIBE Eco Trail has significant potential as an effective educational platform when systematically integrated into university teaching and learning activities.
