GenusPontocythereDubovsky, 1939 Type species. Pontocythere turbida Dubovsky, 1939 Remarks. Representatives of the genus Pontocythere are often infralittoral to very shallow marine, typically sand-dwellers, preferring the high sand-content environments near mouths and channels of bays (Bodergat and Ikeya 1988; Rossi 2009; Cabral and Loureiro 2013; Yasuhara et al. 2019; Yoo and Karanovic 2019; Aiello et al. 2021; El Baz et al. 2025), although species with deeper water depth preferences exist, such as upper shelf (i. e., <200 m) species, such deep species are primarily based on fossil records from the Mediterranean (Bonaduce et al. 1977; Aiello et al. 2018).
