Rice is the most important crop on the planet, providing a staple meal for more than 2.4 billion people. It occupies the greatest area of plantation in the Asia-Pacific region. About 90% of the world’s rice is consumed in the Asian region. Scientists have predicted that rice consumption in the Asian region would increase faster than population growth. The availability of nitrogen is most frequently related to bacteria such as Herbaspirillum. Inorganic nitrogen fertilizers being environmentally and economically costly, attention to the use of alternative sources of nitrogen fertilizer has been renewed to give confidence for sustainable agriculture. Biological nitrogen fixation has been demonstrated to have many agronomic, economic, and environmental benefits for rice-based farming systems. This chapter discusses traditional and new aspects of biological nitrogen fixation of rice-based farming systems with examples primarily chosen from developing countries. 296
