A SURVEY-BASED ASSESSMENT OF VR-ENHANCED GMDSS TRAINING

This paper explores the pedagogical impact and user experience of delivering Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) instruction in a Virtual Reality (VR)-enabled bridge simulator setting.Using immersive VR headsets, maritime students took part in a series of simulated emergency communication scenarios designed to reflect real-world operating environments.An extensive survey was carried out in order to assess participants' learning outcomes, levels of engagement, system usability, and perceived realism of the virtual bridge environment.Both Likert-scale and open-ended questions were used in the questionnaire to garner quantitative trends and qualitative insights.Initial results indicate that VR-based GMDSS training substantially enhances situational awareness, retention of procedures, and learner motivation.Respondents underscored the way the virtual bridge simulator played a critical role in enhancing their focus and self-confidence in handling GMDSS operations.However, some of the respondents underscored the physical discomfort and adaptation challenges that resulted from extended use of VR.This study provides strong evidence for the incorporation of VR technologies in maritime training and offers recommendations toward refining the design and implementation of immersive, simulationbased training modules.
