Abstract This study presents a comprehensive climatological analysis of solar radiation components over the decade 2014-2023, focusing on 9 major cities in Greece. Utilizing Earth Observation data, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and advanced modelling techniques, we assess the impact of clouds, aerosols and urban architecture related shadowing effects on solar radiation. The research aims to estimate the maximum feasible rooftop area for photovoltaic (PV) installations, evaluating energy sufficiency and autonomy potential in urban environments. The methodology employed leverages established frameworks and findings from recent literature and the whole approach ensures a robust foundation for the current analysis, fully aligning with contemporary research trends. It expands to an overall analysis on a Pan-Hellenic scale, integrating both vector and raster data. Our findings include detailed urban fabric density classifications and distributions, energy consumption patterns, and production metrics. We also quantify energy adequacy percentages, which range from approximately 15% to 35%, CO 2 emissions avoided per capita, that fluctuate between 0.35 and 1 Mt, and financial impacts due to atmospheric and urban conditions. The corresponding results are further visualized in the end through maps of Greece, highlighting Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI), PVGIS simulations outputs, and PV performance ratios, varying from 79% to 86%. This work aligns with global energy transitio...
