Abstract Malachite green (MG), a synthetic organic dye, is widely used across various industries as a colorant and antimicrobial agent. However, its toxic and carcinogenic properties have caused severe environmental impacts. As a typical metal–organic framework (MOF) material, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) has remarkable adsorption capacity for MG due to its large specific surface area and high porosity. In this work, we developed a high-performance MG sensor using ZIF-67 as a sensitizing layer to modify a prism-type SPR configuration for highly sensitive and specific detection of MG dyes via drop-casting. The performance of the sensor was related to the amount of ZIF-67, which could be controlled by adjusting the number of drop-casting cycles. Experimental results demonstrated that the sensor exhibited favorable selectivity toward MG, with a sensitivity of 0.173 nm (μg ml −1 ) −1 and a limit of detection (LOD) of 9.364 μg ml −1 , and a robust linear correlation over the concentration range of 20–120 μg ml −1 . This enhanced performance shows significant superiority over bare gold-based SPR sensors. Furthermore, compared to other interfering substances at similar concentrations, the ZIF-67-sensitized sensors demonstrated significant SPR resonance wavelength shifts specifically for MG, thereby confirming the sensor’s exceptional sensitivity and selectivity for MG detection.
