Sociological research in America has often focused on areas in which there are significant legal aspects (for example, crime and delinquency). However, there is no one general body of sociological understanding uncritically accepted by everyone. In fact, there are a variety of theoretical perspectives that are simply different ways of perceiving and understanding the social world. Therefore, the distinctive feature of sociology is not so much what is studied but how it is studied and explained.
