Effects of dimethisterone on endometrial adenocarcinoma--electron microscopic study.

14 patients with endometrial carcinoma were given a large amount of gestagens in daily doses of 10-200 mg and total doses 250-11000 mg. Histopathologically the endometrial carcinomas included 7 differentiated type 5 intermediate type 1 undifferentiated type and 1 adenocanthoma. Material from 7 cases which were given over 4000 mg of dimethisterone were examined by electron microscope. For comparison specimens from 10 women at luteal phase of menstrual cycle were also studied by the electron microscope. After preparatum and staining sections were examined with Hitachi HS-7S and HV-11B electron microscopes. Under light microscope observations after over 4000 mg of gestagen adenocarcinoma cells developed the changes which simulated those presented by the glandular cells in the secretory phase. The cells became tall with clear homogenous cytoplasm which contained large vacuoles. Glandular lumens were sometimes dotted with droplets of secreted materials. These changes were seen only in well differentiated adenocarcinoma. In the undifferentiated cases and in the adenocanthoma few changes were seen. Decidual changes were infrequent in the stroma of carcinoma tissue but in some cases treated with over 6000 mg of gestagen they were seen.
