Actively Phase Controlled Broadband Optical Phased Arrays for 2D Beam Steering

Silicon-based optical phased array (OPA) offer significant potential for high-density integration and flexible beam steering, making them highly promising for applications in miniaturized LiDAR and optical wireless communication. However, the beam steering along the grating direction for 1D OPA is limited by the tunable laser. In this paper, a broadband wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) emitter is used to parallel trigger an optical phased array for 2D active beam steering. The compact WDM emitter provides a broadband source of 1270 nm-1610 nm to trigger parallel emissions along the OPA grating direction in a wide-angle rang, covering the whole optical communication band. The 2D steering range of$50^{\circ} \times 48^{\circ}$is achieved by actively controllable phase tuning of parallel emitted beams.
