Inflammation may contribute to the exacerbation of the postoperative reactions following Hemoporfin-PDT for PWS

Significance Hemoporfin-PDT is a promising treatment for Port-wine stains (PWS), but some patients experience severe side effects like swelling, itching, and pain. Approach This study focused on six patients with PWS who had severe postoperative reactions after Hemoporfin-PDT. We collected and analyzed patient-related data, including pre-treatment conditions, treatment parameters, postoperative responses, management of adverse effects and prognosis. Results Of the six patients, one had a history of psoriasis, three had eczema, and two presented with elevated eosinophil counts in pre-treatment blood tests. Following Hemoporfin-PDT, all patients experienced significant swelling, pruritus, and pain at the treatment site. All adverse effects resolved completely within one month of treatment, with no discernible impact on the overall therapeutic efficacy. Conclusions Baseline inflammatory status contribute to the exacerbation of the postoperative reactions following Hemoporfin-PDT for PWS patients.
