Phosphinidene Transfer by an N -Heterocyclic Carbene-Parent Phosphinidene Complex

The use of N -heterocyclic carbene–phosphinidene complexes for phosphinidene transfer reactions presents a significant challenge. The (1,3-bis(isopropyl)imidazol-2-ylidene)-parent phosphinidene complex 1 was found to successfully transfer the parent phosphinidene to both 9,10-phenanthrenequinone and the amidinato silylsilylene complex 3, affording the imidazolium tris(phenanthrene-9,10-dioxy)phosphate 2 and amidinato phosphasilene 4, respectively. Theoretical studies reveal that the parent phosphinidene transfer from the N -heterocyclic carbene to the silylsilylene proceeds via an S N 2-type mechanism.
