Diversity and biogeography of Angola’s native Annonaceae in the context of climate change

Abstract The Annonaceae family is important for nutrition and traditional medicine but remains understudied in Africa. In this study, we investigated the diversity, distribution, and conservation status of native Annonaceae species in Angola, highlighting their biogeographical patterns and major conservation challenges. An updated checklist was developed using biological collections, databases, and literature. Georeferenced records were used to map species richness, and climatic data supported projections of environmental changes in tropical wet and dry environments where these species occur. A total of 23 genera and 83 species (including 15 endemics) were identified as native to Angola. The most diverse genera are Xylopia (16 species), Monanthotaxis (15 species), and Uvaria (14 species). Species richness is highest in wet tropical environments, particularly in Cabinda, which hosts ∼50 species (7 endemics). Some species seem well adapted to semi-dry climates in southern Angola. About 21% of the diversity of Annonaceae species of continental Africa is found in Angola. The rainforest of Cabinda exhibits the highest species richness. Given projected climatic shifts, conservation strategies must prioritize the preservation of species diversity, especially in response to rising temperatures. The Angolan Annonaceae represent a valuable reservoir of plant genetic diversity, adapted to both wet and dry tropical ecosystems, that needs further investigation.
