As digital media contribute to greater societal connections between individuals, they simultaneously enable the use of information for unintended purposes. This systematic literature review seeks to understand communication hijacking, which is an extreme form of losing control of communications. Communication hijacking, defined as an undesirable co-option that goes against the original purpose, occurs at several levels. The organization that is a hijacking victim risks losing control over its message, media, or reputation, resulting in difficulties in maintaining competitive advantage, controlling message and information dissemination, or restoring reputation. The less control an organization has over the media and the message, the more vulnerable it is to external influence and impact. This review lists seven levels of digital media hijacking that organizations should consider in their risk evaluation. Analysis of counter-influence activities suggests that organizations should carefully study predisposing factors that contribute to increased vulnerability due to digital media control theory.
