Adopting modular integrated construction (MiC) in road pavement construction: Concepts, applications, and challenges

Modular integrated construction (MiC) is capable of providing notable improvements in efficiency, safety, and sustainability. However, the potential of MiC in road pavement construction remains largely unexplored. This review paper examines the applicability of MiC concepts and technologies to modular road pavement construction, focusing on production, transportation, and on-site installation stages. Particular attention is given to the precast concrete pavement, which currently offers the most feasible route due to its structural integrity and compatibility with MiC principles. In contrast, the prefabrication of asphalt-based system poses substantial challenges due to material limitations. The review also highlights key technological enablers, including digital design tools, optimised logistics, and automation, that can help address the constraints of modular pavement application. Moreover, major barriers of road pavement applications with MiC such as the absence of standardised design frameworks and installation complexities are identified, along with proposed solutions.
